Bentonite was initially applied to agriculture and animal husbandry in the 1960s and was intensively promoted during 1970s to 1980s by countries including the USA, Japan, the former Soviet Union and Czech Republic. 

Researches regarding physiochemical properties, structural features, processing technology as well as animal tests of bentonite prove that bentonite contains a number of microelements that are essential to meet the physiological needs of livestock and poultry. The chemical composition of bentonite is Nax（H2O）4{（Al2-xMgx）[Si4O10]（OH）2}. Apart from Al and Si, it also contains a number of macroelements and microelements such as Mg, Fe, K, Zn, Cu, Ca, P, Na, I, Se as well as bioactive substances, which can help livestock and poultry to improve appetite, aid digestion, adjust body balance, enhance immunity, prevent disease and keep healthy, etc. The application of bentonite to feeds can increase feed conversion rate while reducing cost, which is irreplaceable and incomparable by any chemical additives; in the meantime, apart from its function to replenish mineral nutrients, bentonite has good palatability and can extend the shelf life of feeds significantly. 

Bentonite as the equipment premix carrier is much better than calcium hydrophosphate and heavy Calcium Carbonate due to the strong adsorption, densification and fineness, substantial liquidity and low dust raising capacity. Tests show that stratification will not occur during processing. Bentonite is characterized by good mixing performance, strong dispersion and adsorption of various vitamins and microelements, uniformity and fastness, capacity of resisting moisture, mould, worms, deterioration and increasing the content of microelements, low cost of raw materials, being the first choice of premix carrier.
